Korean Counters, What the Counting Word Actually Counts

Two individual apples labeled 개 beside two closed boxes of apples labeled 박스, asking what is being counted.

사과 두 개 means two apples. 사과 두 박스 means two boxes of apples. Both phrases contain 사과, “apple,” and 두, “two,” but they do not promise the same amount of fruit. The last word changes what the number counts.

Korean counters are words used with numbers to identify a counting unit. Lists of Korean counter words are useful, but memorizing “one noun, one counter” can cause two different mistakes: overlooking a change in quantity, or rejecting another valid way to count the same objects.

Start with the unit, then read the number

A useful beginner pattern is thing + number + counter. Read 사과 두 개 as 사과 (sagwa, apples) + 두 (du, two) + 개 (gae, individual items).

In the National Institute of Korean Language dictionary, 개 counts individual objects. The dictionary also lists 박스 as a unit for things packed in boxes.

  • Phrase: 사과 두 개
    sagwa du gae
What is counted: Two individual apples
What is still unknown: Their size or weight
  • Phrase: 사과 두 박스
    sagwa du bakseu
What is counted: Two boxes of apples
What is still unknown: How many apples are inside
사과 두 개 counts two apples, while 사과 두 박스 counts two boxes of apples whose contents are unknown.

If a stock note reads 사과 두 박스, 낱개 세 개, it records two boxes of apples, plus three individual apples. That is not a total of five apples: the number inside each box is still unknown. To calculate the total, count the apples in each box and add the three loose apples.

Two counters can also describe the same objects

Changing the counter does not always change the quantity. Consider two long-handled umbrellas:

  • 우산 두 개 — usan du gae — two umbrellas, counted as individual objects.
  • 우산 두 자루 — usan du jaru — two umbrellas, counted with a word used for elongated implements.

In an official answer about umbrellas, the National Institute of Korean Language says both 개 and 자루 can be used for an elongated umbrella. Here, both phrases can refer to the same pair. 자루 does not turn the umbrellas into bundles.

우산 두 개 and 우산 두 자루 joined to the same pair of long-handled umbrellas as two valid ways to count them.

Rather than assuming one counter per noun, ask: does the alternative counter still count each object, or does it count a container or group? The umbrella pair keeps the objects separate. The apple-box pair changes the unit. This specific overlap does not make 개 a universal substitute for every counter.

Keep the number in its counting form

For the small quantities above, two is 두 before the counter, not the standalone 둘. Sogang University's counting-unit lesson gives these forms with 개:

한 개 (han gae), one; 두 개 (du gae), two; 세 개 (se gae), three; 네 개 (ne gae), four; 스무 개 (seumu gae), twenty.

Keep a space between the written number word and counter: 두 개. These examples use native Korean numbers. The number system depends on the counting unit.

Counting forms with 개: 한 개, 두 개, 세 개, 네 개, and 스무 개 for one, two, three, four, and twenty.
